Galanthus ‘Emma Mackenzie’

A fine, substantial snowdrop selected by Ronald Mackenzie at Shilton, Oxfordshire, and named for his daughter. ‘Emma Mackenzie’ is thought to be a cross between ‘Daglingworth’ and Galanthus ‘Colesbourne’, although the parentage is best regarded as probable rather than formally documented. The combination produces a particularly attractive plant, with good flower size, strong growth and the characteristic refinement associated with these older Gloucestershire and Colesbourne lines.

Its provenance is especially interesting: rather than being a modern nursery selection, ‘Emma Mackenzie’ represents Ronald Mackenzie’s own work with established garden snowdrops, selected in his Shilton garden. The cultivar remains relatively uncommon and is now maintained in the Edulis collection. 

Cultivation: Grow in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade or beneath deciduous trees. Avoid prolonged summer drought. Allow foliage to mature and die back naturally after flowering.
