A particularly fresh and attractive pre-Christmas virescent form of the common snowdrop, Galanthus nivalis ‘Limetime’ is proof that even a classic can benefit from a little extra lime. An unusually early-flowering selection, it can be in bloom before Christmas, when its green-marked flowers are particularly welcome in an otherwise largely dormant garden.

The well-proportioned flowers have crisp white outer segments surrounding inner segments marked with an unusually bright, lime-green pattern. This fresh green colouring gives ‘Limetime’ a distinctly luminous quality in the low light of winter. The foliage is typical of G. nivalis, while the overall plant retains the natural grace and vigour of the species.

A choice snowdrop for those who appreciate the subtler oddities of the genus, ‘Limetime’ combines the charm of G. nivalis with conspicuous green colouring and the considerable advantage of flowering before Christmas. It is particularly effective planted where the flowers can be inspected at close quarters — preferably on a cold, bright December morning, when the lime-green markings can really show themselves off.

Cultivation: Grow in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade or beneath deciduous trees and shrubs. Avoid prolonged summer drought and permanently waterlogged conditions. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering. Excellent for naturalising beneath deciduous trees and shrubs or for bringing some much-needed winter colour to the garden before Christmas.
